Reflection Exercise
Map your nervous system
Understanding your own nervous system is a practical skill for everyday life. This mapping exercise supports you in getting to know your baseline state, your habitual responses to stress and safety, and the edges of your current capacity. Rather than analysing or judging your experience, the intention is to build clarity and orientation – noticing what steadies you, what challenges you, and how your system adapts to the world around you. This awareness can support more informed choices, healthier boundaries, and greater resilience in daily life, and it becomes especially valuable for anyone working with or alongside others.
A few important steps to follow:
- Give yourself enough time, at least 45 minutes.
- Do this relfection exercise from a grounded place. Maybe start with a movement or meditation practice to help you be in your body more.
- Go in the order explained in the video - start with a slight activation (3 out of 10), then go to a state of overwhelm (7 out of 10), and always finish with a connected state.
- After the exercise, do something to help you integrate - e.g. some movement, a walk, dance, rest.
- You can go back to this exercise on a regular basis, maybe every three months, to check in.
